Fret
A fret is a piece of metal that has been attached to the fretboard which is used to shorten the length of the strings in order to play higher sounding pitches. The word fret can also mean the action of pressing a string against a fret.
Most classical guitars have 12 accessible frets, while steel string acoustics generally have 14. Most electric guitars have 21 or 22 frets, many have 24, and some custom specially produced guitars have even more than 24.
